What Must I Do...?
|
 The story is told of a man many years ago attending an evangelistic meeting and hearing the Evangelist preach the Word of God with all his heart. As he listened his heart was stirred and he realized he was a lost sinner, separated from God and on his way to hell. Yet, though his heart was stirred, he did not respond to the invitation to receive Christ as his Savior. The meeting ended leaving him with a heavy and sad heart. However, as the Evangelist was preparing to go back to his own home, the crowd left and these two were left alone. The man was searching and hoping that he could find the answer to his need and went up to the Evangelist just as he was about to leave and asked, "What must I do to be saved?" The Evangelist only looked at him briefly, then continued preparing to leave and simply replied, "It's too late." The man replied, "Surely there is something that I can do to relieve this burden in my heart. I heard you say as you preached that there is a way of salvation, but now you tell me it is too late to be saved." "No, I did not say it is too late to be saved," said the Evangelist, "just that it is too late for you to DO anything to be saved. That work has already been done by the Lord Jesus Christ. All you can do, all any of us can do, is to trust in Him, and the very Word of God says that you will be saved!" Thankfully that Evangelist understood what the Bible teaches about salvation, and was able to help that man understand it in an unforgettable way.
Unfortunately, not everyone that stands behind a pulpit or speaks through the media and purports to give the way of salvation, actually tells us the truth of the Word of God on this most important matter.
