Self Examination?

Do you enjoy taking Tests?  There have been times in my past academic experiences that I would rather have flopped down in a Dentist’s chair and received a root canal than subject myself to a test.  I have discovered by experience that our attitudes toward testing depends on if we have had good experiences with testing in the past.  Also, if we feel we thoroughly know the material, then we feel much better about the test.

Do you know that the Scriptures speak of exams?  One such occasion is when Paul wrote to his friends at the Corinthian Church: “Examine yourselves, whether you be in the faith; prove your own selves.  Know you not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you…”  If you have to take an exam, perhaps, one you give yourself is the least threatening.  Paul used two different testing words in this quote.  “Examine” means to test, to assay, that is to put something to an objective test to be sure it is genuine.  Next, he used “prove” which means to test something, to make sure it measures up to specific qualifications.

Through the years I have asked thousands, “If you died today, do you know for sure you would go to heaven?”  Have you ever quizzed yourself with this question?  This is what Paul had in mind when he said “Examine yourselves.”  Be sure you have settled this question in your soul between you and God.  It is He that you must satisfy.  The question is not, “ Am I a church member; not, “Have I gone through catechism or been baptized; not, "Have I done many good things?"  The question is “Have I come to God on His terms?”  Have you believed what God has said about your sin and His salvation?  He has said you are a sinner and you need a Savior.  Jesus Christ is the only one perfectly righteous who could pay for your sins and make you acceptable to God.  “He that has the Son has life.”

At BBN-BI we also use tests, but ours are non-threatening.  In fact we suggest that you bring up our tests on your computer screen and answer the questions as you listen to the teachers.  The goal is to help you listen more carefully and to help you focus with fewer distractions.  You get to examine yourself.  The link to help you with this is: http://www.bbnradio.org/wcm4/bbnbienglish/FAQ/tabid/2303/ArticleID/8623/Default.aspx
