George was asked by a
co-worker: “What do you believe?”
He replied with great
enthusiasm, “I believe what my Pastor believes.”
His friend, Allen,
retorted: “What does your Pastor believe?”
“He believes what our
church believes,” added George.
Not a little exasperated,
Allen enquired: “What does your church
believe?”
Naively George concluded,
“The same things me and my Pastor believe!”
We live in a time when the
average person is more confused than a termite in a plastics factory. Sadly there are too few who can effectively
articulate their beliefs and the reasons for holding them. In our world there is more false doctrine
being communi- cated than ever before.
Many assume a belief because of what they heard someone on TV say or
read in a book or from ideas they heard from a person they perceive to be
respectable.
The Bible instructs and
warns us repeatedly of the necessities for us to know the truth. To know the truths of God’s Word requires
effort, study, discipline, and discernment.
Note the words of God: “The time
will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts
shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall
turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned to fables. But watch thou (be discerning) in all
things…” (II Timothy 4:3-5). “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a
workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth,” (II
Timothy 2:15).
“But sanctify the Lord God
in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that ask
you a reason of the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear (I Peter 3:15).”
