Can We Know The Future?
|
 To know what will happen to us in the future is a very popular question. There are places of business dotted all over the land that purport to have the answer to the personal future of the patrons that dare to enter them. But the question that is even more pertinent is, can we even know the future with any degree of certainty? To understand what will happen at the end of history we must understand what happened near the beginning. The Bible has the answers for both of these questions, and more. Yet men have given varied answers to the question of what the future holds. Who is right? Well, it seems that the one who has been right in the past, especially concerning minute details that would be humanly impossible to guess the answer, would be the best one to trust. The Old Testament prophets accurately predicted the very details of the Lord Jesus' first coming (and second coming for that matter), and we know the details of His second coming will be fulfilled because those of His first coming were!
But, back to our original question of whether we can even know the future. Certainly we can, and as we have stated, the Bible gives us the answers that we need. But we also note that the Bible has not told us everything that we might want to know. Again, there is great wisdom in this. God knows the difference between what we need to know and what we might want to know. There may be some things we want to know that are not good for us to know at the present. For example, God alone knows the time of Jesus' second coming. We are only told to be ready. If we were to take the Lord's command to be ready seriously, our spiritual lives would likely be much better than they are. The wisest course of action here as in every area of our lives is to trust God and His Word on the subject!
