God asked His people to do something He had not asked others to do. He asked them during an especially sinful and low time in their history to call a solemn assembly where they would bow down in repentance and return to the Lord. God used his prophet, Joel, to deliver this hard message during a wicked time, and unfortunately the Scriptures never record that any of the people rightly responded to God except one, and that was the prophet himself. His response is recorded in the 19th verse of Joel 1: “O Lord, to Thee will I cry: for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned all the trees of the field.” Joel was referring to a terrible locust plague that had come on the land of Israel, but this plague, as terrible as it was, was just a small foretaste of a much more complete and disastrous judgment that was to come from God in a future Day. This coming Day is what Scripture often calls The Day of the Lord. God often used His prophets to use an event of their day to illustrate a coming judgment that we know is this coming, Day of the Lord. This Day is a set time in God’s own will in which He will right all wrongs and even more, He will also remove the causes of those wrongs!
