NEARLY EXTINCT

NEARLY EXTINCT

There is a rare species of individuals that are speedily approaching extinction.  Having been in the ministry for four decades I can remember when this species was hardy and numerous.  Today, it seems, finding one of them is as rare as finding a fossilized jawbone of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. The rare species missing and more needful than ever before is – Discerning Christians.

Where have all the Discerning Christians gone?  I remember some years back it wasn’t unusual for individuals to know and espouse there was only one Savior and only one way to heaven. They were unashamed to declare the Bible the Word of God, Jesus, the Son of God and God incarnate.  They unashamedly had no difficulty declaring sin is sin and right is right.  They knew what things were unacceptable, immoral, unethical and ungodly.  Those Discerning Christians knew certain types of music and behavior were unacceptable in the church house.  They knew that one of the highest of priorities was the preaching of God’s Word in the church house.  The difference between Christians and non-Christians was noticeable and expected.  Today, it seems few practice, affirm, verbalize or contend for these things.  Where are the Discerners?  Why don't Christians recognize sin?  Why will they not condemn it?  If wrong doctrine is being touted in churches and worldly music and programs being "performed" and biblical criterion for pastors, deacons, and leaders are being ignored- where are the Discerning Christians crying out against these travesties?  Where are Christians that recognize wrong and unacceptable music, morals, and media content?  Why is it so rare that one will stand up to his/her church, children, peers, and society and say, NO!  Not my church! Not in my home!  Not on my watch!

Abraham in his day refused to dwell in Sodom and Gomorrah with those in perversion.  Joshua in his day stood up to idolatry – he said, “You choose today whom you will serve, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord God!”  Paul the Apostle affirmed, "I know in whom I have believed and I am persuaded....”  Were these dogmatic?  Were they saying they were right and others were wrong?? Yes!  Jude, our Lord’s half-brother wrote: “earnestly contend for the faith that was delivered and should remain unchanged.”

How can we become more discerning?  Accurately learn the Scriptures and then unapologetically obey and live them.   Unashamedly share the Gospel and Bible truths with others.  Refuse to be silent and tolerant, when you should stand or speak, concerning words and actions that are erroneous.  BBNBI desires to provoke, enable, and proliferate godly discerners.  May their breed increase!
