Moving Heaven

Moving Heaven

and Earth for You

Have you ever heard the phrase, moving Heaven and Earth to reach someone? Obviously this is simply an illustrative phrase, since we cannot do either one. Yet this is exactly what God did to get the Gospel of Jesus Christ to us so that we may hear it, believe it and be made right with God! Mary and Joseph were living in Nazareth, and it was nearly time for her to give birth. They probably were becoming comfortable where they were, we don’t know, the Bible does not say, but one thing is for sure, it could not have been comfortable for them to pull up their roots and make a trip to Bethlehem in her condition, but they had no choice, the ruler of the then-known world, Caesar Augustus, had made a decree and they simply had to go! So, as Luke matter-of-factly tells us, they went.

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. (Lk.2:1-5)

So, God has moved earth, but what about heaven? Matthew tells us that wise men came from the east, and ended up in Jerusalem, asking about where the King of the Jews was to be born. How did they know this? Well, again the Bible doesn’t come right out and tell us, but one thing it does tell us is that they were following a star!

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. (Mt.2:1-2)

So, now God has moved Heaven and Earth to get the Gospel to us! Something this literally earth-shaking must be important! So important, that on our reception or rejection of it rests our eternal destiny.

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (Jn.3:36)
